My husband and I have been together for nearly 18 years now, and I have never really given a whole lot of thought to the fact that there’s nearly a decade between us (it’s technically only 8 3/4 years, but who’s counting, right?) because the two of us have always just fit so well together.
As we’ve gotten older, I’ve thought even less about our age differences, heck, right now we are both in our 40s! It doesn’t happen often that our ages fall in the same decade, so I like to point it out when it does.
When we first met I had already been married and had kids, and he was in his 30s. We had both lived a bit before, so “firsts” are something we’ve always made a bit of a game out of recognizing.
Sometimes they are significant (like right now we are building a house for the first time and will be the first people ever to live on the property), and then other times they are silly (like the first time we each had sex in Pennsylvania it was with each other!)
Recently though, we got to experience a new “first” together.
My husband, Mike – for those who aren’t familiar with him yet, grew up in Florida and then spent nearly 30 years working in construction, where he spent a lot of time in the sun, so naturally, we’ve kept a close eye on his skin, just in case. Recently, we met with a dermatologist to have a couple spots looked at and to have one mole removed and biopsied, and when the doctor came in he introduced himself to Mike, and then looked at me and said “And you must be his daughter?”
(Note: The biopsy came back clear. We are just watching a couple spots on his face, but the doctor isn’t concerned)
Mike and I both certainly got a laugh out of that. It was even funnier to me because just a few days before that my daughter had told me that I don’t look my age (nearly 41), but that I could probably pass for closer to 33!
I gotta say, the idea of turning 41 wasn’t really bothering me, and while I don’t think I look quite THAT young, I don’t think I’ve aged too poorly – Especially since I’m going to be a grandmother this coming Summer.
The secret to my success? I’ll share it for free! I simply don’t leave my house, haha!
